Extracurricular Activities

Sv. Filip i Jakov is surrounded by four National Parks, each warranting a whole day of relaxation and enjoyment of nature. Surrounding cities are full of history dating back to Roman times.

National Park Kornati

A trip to Kornati islands is a ship cruise, typically taking the whole day. The ship, leaving St. Filip i Jakov in the morning, needs around an hour to reach the islands. The experience combines swimming in the transparent blue seas around Kornati islands, a dip in the lake, excellent sea food and music. A word of warning: sun protection is a must even on the cloudy days, as the crystal-clear water and white rocks of Kornati makes sun shining stronger.

National Park Paklenica Gorge

After a short drive, Paklenica is best experienced by hiking. The trip can be designed as a full or a half-day.

National Park Plitvice Lakes
Plitvice Lakes are few hours away by car. Once there, one can take a walking tour exploring the waterfalls and lakes, with a break for a swim in the lake on a warm day. Local food and specialties are served for dinner. The trip typically takes a whole day.

National Park Waterfalls of Krka

The waterfalls of Krka are less than two hour drive away. Once there, the waterfalls are enjoyed by hiking on foot, with a stop to swim in one of the lakes formed between the waterfall sediments and barriers. The trip usually takes a whole day.

Split

The town of Split features Diocletian’s Palace from the Roman times. It is also a town with several strong waterpolo clubs. The visit is often combined with a a game with a local team.

Dubrovnik

Visit to Dubrovnik is usually planned over at least two days. There is so much to do and see around the town, from historical old town to dining and entertainment. Dubrovnik is a stronghold of Croatian waterpolo, a home town of Jug, one of the strongest water polo club teams in Europe.

Zagreb

The capital of Croatia can be reached in four hours by car, or two hours by car and airplane combined. Several days can be spent in Zagreb only to scratch the surface… which is, to legend says, how the city started: by scratching the surface to find running water. Zagreb is the home of Mladost, another Croatian champion club team. Medvescak and Zagreb, other two club teams, are also very strong. All three teams have a strong age-group waterpolo program. A master water polo player team Stara Sava (‘old’ Sava), named after the river Sava that flows through the city, competes internationally competing in over-forty age group.
